Author and playwright Swadesh Deepak was born in Rawalpindi (Pakistan). After an MA in English and Hindi Literature, he taught English for several decades at the Gandhi Memorial National College, Ambala Cantonment. Following a period of illness from 1991 to 1997, when Deepak had little contact with anyone other than his family and close friends, he made a return to the world of letters with an autobiographical account of his illness, ‘Maine Mandu Nahin Dekha’ and the play, ‘Sabse Udaas Kavita.’
Best known for his play ‘Court Martial’, Deepak received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2004. He has a total of 17 published books, including short-story collections and novels. such as ‘Tamasha’ and ‘Kisi Ek Pedh Ka Naam Lo’, besides plays including ‘Kaal Kothri’ and ‘Jalta Hua Rath’. ‘Meine Mandu Nahin Dekha’ has now been translated into English by Jerry Pinto — ‘I Have Not Seen Mandu’ (Speaking Tiger).
In 2006, he left home for a walk and never returned.
He has been missing ever since.
